2009 is the Bicentennial of Hannibal Hamlin’s birth

Hannibal Hamlin was born August 27, 1809 in Paris, Maine. He was born to Dr. Cyrus and Anna Livermore Hamlin. The farm house on Paris Hill where Hamlin was born and grew up over looks the White Mountains of New Hampshire which are also known as the “Presidential Range.”

He was the 15^th Vice-President of the United States, serving under Abraham Lincoln from 1861 – 1865.   He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, Governor of the State of Maine, and Ambassador to Spain.

Hannibal Hamlin was a lawyer from Maine who served his state and country well. He began his political career as a Democrat but in 1856 joined the newly organized Republican Party.  He was the first elected Republican Vice-President.  He was outspoken in his opposition to Slavery and urged Lincoln to announce his Emancipation Proclamation. 

Charles Mears built sawmills in the Ludington area in settlements then called Little Sauble (1851) and Big Sable (1854).  These two settlements were later renamed by Mears to Lincoln and Hamlin in 1861 in honor of the successful Republican Presidential ticket.
