Barnhart’s

Barnhart’s is located on the upper lake on the property adjacent to Arcadia.  Initially the area was called Barnhart’s Landing and the Barnhart family operated a farm on the property.  They supplied produce for the dinning room at Camp Arcadia.  At some point in the early 1900’s Barnhart’s opened a general store with a gas station, and took over the boat livery operation from Arcadia.

Through the 1950’s and into the 60’s, Barnhart’s was a center of activity on the upper lake.  People came here to get ice cream, rent a boat, buy worms, mail a letter, make a phone call, buy groceries and get the daily newspaper.  And if you were a teen ager, you hung out here to meet other teens on the lake.

Anyone have more information about the early history of Barnhart’s should contact Judy at jhoxiethorp@hotmail.com.  Additional photos as well as information would be welcome.
