Winter Fun

 Tom Nichols, North Bayou

I remember the winter fun on Hamlin Lake when I was a teenager in the early 1940s.  We lived on Lakeshore Drive between Tamarac and South Bayou.  One of those winters the ice was really good – smooth an clear of snow – and we would skate upwind to the north end of Lower Hamlin, open up our coats like a sail and go roaring down the lake back home.

I remember one time carrying a long pole, nervous that the ice wouldn’t hold us a we skated along the edge and then looking out the middle of the lake and seeing cars sitting there with folks fishing from them.  And here I was being so cautious about just my body weight.
